Snowshoe news, january 22

January 22, 2012 at 7:09 PM

It was really cold for the past week, so it was with some surprise that a snowshoer broke through into the mud and water on the Snowy Owl trail on Saturday. The thin ice signs are up and some people have been able to safely cross the beaver pond on Snowy Owl but, on Saturday, Tom dropped his snowshoe into the muck and anerobic (that is, smelly) bacteria in the beaver pond.

Please be careful when crossing ponds and marshes.

The Saturday trip was up the north side of Snowy Memorial (from highway 33), along Snow View to the top of Thunder Mountain, and then back to the main cabin via Snow View, Snowy Lynx, Snow Business, and Snowy Vista.

On Sunday, three intrepid snowshoers cleared the remaining portions of Snow Business. Now the trail has been chainsawed, pruned, and reflagged. Thanks to Craig, Jim, and Robert for their work on this trail, today and on other occasions. Once Snow Business was finished, we headed north on Snowy Leon. Please note that there is no Snowy Leon sign where that trail leaves Snow Business. Someone stole it, or at least took it down.

Continuing north, we continued halfway to the intersection with Fletcher Challenge. Then we headed east through the bush towards Snowy Vista. 500 metres later, after trailbreaking through deep snow, we arrived. This connector makes it possible to go out on Snowy Vista, Snow Business, and Snowy Leon, and return by Snowy Vista. There are no trails signs on this unnamed connector and no ribbons either. The trip was to see if a connection is possible and it is; flagging will follow on another trip.

I have a plan for another snowshoe trail. This one will be called Snow Blind and will join Snowy Vista and Snowy Owl.

Other trails we saw being used are Snowy Hilton, Snowy Cabin, and Snowy Moonlight. Rather surprisingly no one had been on Snowbound.

Happy snowshoeing!
